Cancellation Rules for Indian Railways Tickets
General Cancellation Guidelines
- E-tickets: Can be cancelled through the IRCTC website, Mobile App or from any online portal from where you booked your ticket.
- Counter tickets: Need to be cancelled at any of the PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counters.
- For E-ticket cancellation: A valid mobile number and email ID registered with the ticket should be provided.
- Partial cancellation: Allowed for some categories like family tickets, wherein cancellation can be done for individual passengers.
- Special tickets: Foreign Tourist Quota, Tatkal tickets, etc. need to be physically cancelled at a PRS counter as online cancellation is not available.

Important Notes:
- No refund is provided if cancellation is done less than 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train.
- For tickets booked under Tatkal scheme, no refund is granted under any circumstances.
- In case of train cancellation by Railways, full refund is automatically processed for e-tickets.
- TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) needs to be filed for certain special cases like train cancellation, chart preparation failures, etc.
